According to the Nassau County Police Arson Bomb Squad, a 78-year-old Duncan Road resident was notified by his 21-year-old granddaughter that smoke was spreading from their garage at approximately 12:20 p.m. on Thursday, July 25.

Police said that the two were able to evacuate the house, and the granddaughter attempted to use a garden hose to put out a fire that was spreading from the garage’s wall. She was unsuccessful, called 911 and the Hempstead Fire Department responded and was able to extinguish the fire without further incident.

An investigation into the fire determined it was allegedly started by Hempstead resident Kaliyh Johnson, who was arrested and charged with second-degree arson. Police said that Johnson was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, Aug. 14 at First District Court in Hempstead.
